The library

The 'Cesare Pecile' Chemistry Library manages the bibliographic holdings in the area of the chemical sciences and closely related disciplines and provides support for the research activities that take place in the Department of Chemical Sciences.

The library originates from a long history, which began with the merger in 1962 of the Institutes of Analytical Chemistry, General Chemistry, Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, which constituted the chemistry group within the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences (MM.FF.NN.) of the University of Padua. This unification led to the creation of the Chemical Seminar Library, located in the building at Via Marzolo 1, where all available resources were brought together. In 1986, the Chemical Seminary was transformed into the Interdepartmental Service Centre, known as 'CIS Centro Interchimico' and the library changed its name again, becoming the Library of the Interchemical Centre.

On 1 January 2004, the still existing Department of Chemical Sciences was created by merging the CIS Interchemistry Centre, the Department of Organic Chemistry, the Department of Inorganic Chemistry and the Department of Physical Chemistry. As a result, the library was named the Library of the Department of Chemical Sciences.

With the reorganisation of the University Library System, the Library of the Department of Chemical Sciences was integrated into the Library Cluster of Science, Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Sciences, further expanding its scope and role within the university.

The last step came in 2013, when the library was officially named the 'Cesare Pecile' Library of Chemistry, in honour of the Professor Emeritus of Physical Chemistry at the University of Padua, who spent himself in the establishment of the University Library System and took on numerous important roles during his career, including that of Dean of the Faculty of Science from 1990 to 1999.
