Best practices
To avoid losing your important files (theses, articles, etc.), it is advisable to make at least two copies on different media (e.g. on two different USB keys) so that if one of the two media fails, you still have the other copy. Another way to make a backup copy is to email the file to your mailbox or make a copy in your Google Drive space linked to your institutional or personal account.
It is advisable not to edit files directly from external USB keys or disks. Before starting your work, copy the file from the USB key to the desktop of the PC, then edit the file by opening it from the desktop and only when you have finished editing, copy the file back onto the USB key or disk, perhaps adding a revision number or date to the target file name, to keep multiple files, with the various revisions, of the same document. In this way, you minimise the chances of losing your work in case of problems with the USB key or disk, or unexpected freezes in applications (LibreOffice, Office, etc.).
