Books

How to search for a book

For consultation and/or download of electronic books outside the University network you should enable the Auth-proxy access or Single Sign-On.

Exam texts are marked with the DIDA labels and are available in the Library, on the shelves of room Benedetti

Classification and organization of monographs

Books are arranged on open shelves, and they are freely accessible.

According to the Dewey Decimal Classification, each book is assigned a classification number that unambiguously locates a particular volume in a position relative to other books in the library, based on its discipline or class. Here is an example of classification:

  • The code BMC identifies the group of books
  • The number 610.9 represents the subject of the book
  • The number 348 is the sequence number and, together with the class, is important for correctly replacing the book and finding it again

It is good practice not to replace books and journals on the shelves after consultation but to place them on the designated cart; the staff will replace them correctly.

Ebooks

The University Library System offers a rich collection of ebooks, available online, even remotely, and searchable through GalileoDiscovery and the MLOL - Media Library OnLine platform. The Library of Medicine provides also specific medical ebook platforms, like AccessMedicine, Edra and others  (see info below).

How to find ebooks

Ebooks can be accessed by institutional users via proxy or Single Sign-On.

Ebooks available in SportDiscus and CINAHL databases, as well as on the multidisciplinary platforms of publishers like Elsevier, Oxford, Springer, and Wiley, are also searchable in GalileoDiscovery.
Guest users are entitled to consult books and journals onsite, as they do not have access to remote access.

How to use ebooks

Access and usage conditions are set by the providers: some ebooks are only available for online consultation, while for others, partial or full downloads and/or printing are possible.
For more info see the conditions in the online catalogue.

Digital Lending

The digital lending service lets you download and read eBooks on a device (eBook reader, computer, tablet, smartphone) for a limited time. Ebooks lending conditions depend on the platform and the publisher. Usually, borrowed eBooks are protected by DRM (Digital Rights Management) such as Adobe DRM or Readium LCP.
