Open Access publishing agreements and discounts
Update as of 07/10/2026. As of today, the TA funding limit with Wiley has been exhausted and the account will be automatically closed. Authors will no longer see article eligibility when submitting a funding request. All previously approved articles that receive editorial acceptance from now on will be automatically canceled and processed through the author-pay procedure.
The 2026 article quota for Open Access publishing under the national Read & Publish agreement with Springer Nature will expire shortly.
Through Open Access publishing agreements with selected publishers, corresponding authors affiliated with the University of Padua may be eligible for APC waivers, discounts, or other publishing benefits, subject to the terms and conditions of each agreement.
Requirements for accessing the benefits available under Open Access publishing agreements
Open Access publishing agreements are negotiated at either the national or institutional level. Each agreement has a defined duration and sets out specific terms and conditions, eligibility requirements, and limits on the benefits available. As these conditions vary between publishers, they should always be verified for the relevant publisher
Where no APC coverage is provided under the applicable Open Access publishing agreement, the corresponding author is responsible for covering the cost through alternative funding sources.
The corresponding author must formally belong to the University of Padua.
Only certain unlimited Open Access publishing agreements include adjunct professors, clinical practice teachers, or lecturers as eligible corresponding authors
Upon submitting the article to the journal, the corresponding authors must indicate the University of Padua as their primary institutional affiliation. See also: best practices for University of Padua institutional affiliation
For eligible authors, multiple institutional affiliations are allowed, but the primary affiliation must be to the University of Padua.
University Hospital of Padua is a Veneto Region Institution. For eligible authors, primary affiliation with the University is mandatory; secondary affiliation with the University - Hospital of Padua is recommended.

University of Padua: best practices for institutional affiliation
Only articles accepted for publication during the term of the OA agreement are eligible. Eligibility is determined by the date of acceptance, not the date of manuscript submission.
Some publishing contracts provide a limited number of articles available annually for Open Access publication at the national level.
Corresponding authors, who choose to publish under the terms of an OA agreement, are responsible for covering the APC with alternative funding if the institution cannot provide financial support due to the exhaustion of available articles (limited agreements), depletion of funds (prepaid agreements), or failure to meet eligibility criteria.
- For Open Access publishing agreements subject to funding limits, information on the availability of APC funding is updated regularly in the relevant publisher section.
- For Gold Open Access (fully OA) publishing and Open Access publishing agreements with limited funding, it is mandatory to set aside an amount equivalent to the APC charged by the journal, inclusive of 22% VAT.
- OA publishing agreements cover only Open Access fees. Any additional publication charges, such as colour charges, page charges, or other optional fees, are not included.
Agreements types
A Read & Publish OA agreement is an institutional subscription in which a scholarly publisher receives payment for reading and publishing under a single contract. Under this type of agreement, authors affiliated with participating institutions can publish Open Access without paying Article Processing Charges (APCs).
A Read & Publish agreement is considered a transformative agreement when it aims to redirect institutional spending away from subscription-based reading and towards Open Access publishing in hybrid journals that are committed to transitioning to fully OA (Gold). A Read & Publishing contract may also cover publishing in Gold OA journals. In Italy, transformative agreements are negotiated at the national level by the CRUI CARE consortium.
Pure OA agreement is an institutional publishing agreement with a fully Open Access (Gold OA) scholarly publisher, which enables authors to publish without paying APCs or with discounted APCs.
S2O (Subscribe to Open) is a scholarly journal subscription model designed to support the transition to Open Access through a more cost-effective mechanism for participating institutions. S2O agreements are based on transparent subscription pricing to support the transition of journals to a more sustainable Gold OA model and to foster community-led Open Access publishing.

- Please remember that by choosing the Open Access option, the corresponding author undertakes to pay the APC with his/her funds in case of refusal or impossibility of financial coverage by the institution with which he/she is affiliated
- The following titles are excluded:
- Journals in the Clinics collection, The Lancet collection of hybrid OA titles and about 300 "ineligible" titles, either because they do not have an OA publication option available or because OA publication is supported by research or government bodies (i.e. SCOAP or Diamond OA journals)

Through the CRUI-CARE national agreement, starting from January 2026, a 12% discount on APCs (Article Processing Charges) is available for Science Advances, a Gold Open Access journal published by AAAS Science.
The eligible article type for which the APC discount can be requested is the Research Article.
Please note that Focus and Reviews article types are commissioned by invitation from the AAAS editorial board and, therefore, are not subject to APCs.

MDPI Journals in DOAJ - Directory of OA Journals
SCOAP3 (Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics) is a financing model for publication costs in Particle Physics journals. It is an international project, coordinated by CERN in Geneva since 2014, aimed at supporting the costs of Open Access publication.
