Books
How to search
GalileoDiscovery is the catalogue of the University Library System.
You can start your search with keywords that are generally part of a title or are related to the topic of your interest.
It is the main tool, freely accessible online, for searching for books and journals owned by the libraries of the University and the city of Padova. It answers questions such as:
- Does the University own the book or journal I am looking for and in which edition?
- In which library is it kept?
- Where is the library located and what are the opening hours?
- Is the book available for loan and under what conditions?
- What is its shelf mark?
See the tutorial Search for a book.
Shelf mark
The books are arranged on the shelves divided by scientific sector according to a shelfmark based on the Dewey Decimal Classification.
It guides the user to the positioning of the book on the shelf.
For each print book, the catalogue indicates its location on library shelves
It is composed of three parts, for example, DTG.338.5.83:
- the first part DTG, identifies the Library of the Department of Engineering and Management;
- the second part .338.5 is based on the Dewey Decimal Classification and identifies the topic covered by the books placed on that part of the shelf;
- the third part, .83, identifies the position of the volume within the sector and is progressive, usually in chronological order (from left to right).
Access to the material
Books are displayed on open shelves in the reading room and therefore freely accessible during library opening hours.
It is good practice not to put back the books consulted. Please place them on the appropriate trolley so that library staff can put them back correctly.
