The library

Origins

In 1869, Prof. G. Omboni (1829-1910), who came to Padua to teach Mineralogy and Geology, formed the first modest nucleus of the geological library with his book collections and Baron De Zigno's (1813-1892) private collection of geological books and maps, was purchased after his death along with the fossil collection (see: G. Dal Piaz, 1971, Guide to the Institute of Geology and Paleontology Museum).

In 1988 the Institute and Museum of Geology, Paleontology and Applied Geology and the Institute of Earth Physics and Geodesy merged into the Department of Geology, Paleontology and Geophysics, and the bibliographic collections of the two Institutes were merged into the new library.

The New Library

Since 2003, the Library has been part of the Sciences Libraries.

As of January 1, 2007, the Department of Geology, Paleontology and Geophysics and the Department of Mineralogy and Petrology merged into the current Department of Geosciences.

The library has a considerable library holdings consisting of:

  • periodicals
  • monographic volumes
  • a collection of ancient-rare volumes prior to 1830
  • four collections of miscellanies
  • cartographic collections
