La Metelli incontra… l’archeologia del Sé

A dialogue between archaeology, psychology and psychoanalysis to explore the signs of inner life

published: Jun 03, 2026

The Fabio Metelli Central Psychology Library at the University of Padua presents the event “La Metelli incontra… L'Archeologia del Sé” (The Metelli library meets... the archeology of the self) scheduled for Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 5:00 p.m., in Room 2A of the Psico2 Building.

The event will be held in italian language.

The event, open to the university community and the general public, guides an original reflection on the relationship between archaeology and psychology, drawing on the book "Archeologia del Sé: percorsi dell’anima" (Cleup, 2025). What archaeologist and psychologist have in common? Both deal with traces, fragments, and evidence that must be brought to light in order to reconstruct stories, meanings, and identities. Archaeological excavation and the exploration of the inner world, in fact, share the same cognitive drive: to understand what time has hidden and to restore form and meaning to what appears scattered or forgotten.

The book’s approach is deeply polyphonic and brings different perspectives into dialogue: that of those who “dig” into their own inner landscape in search of elements for reconstructing their own history, and that of professionals working in clinical, educational, and thanatological fields - therapists and trainers who accompany individuals and communities through processes of change, healing, and transformation.

The guests at the event will be

  • Alessia Zielo, an archaeo-thanatologist, professor in the Master’s program in Death Studies & The End of Life and the Course in Psychology of End-of-Life Relationships at the University of Padua, a trainer in Medical Humanities, and editor of the volume
  • Matteo Rigo, clinical psychologist and trainee in psychoanalytic psychotherapy
  • Claudio Widmann, Jungian psychoanalyst, senior analyst at the Italian Center for Analytical Psychology (CIPA), where he teaches and supervises
  • Cristina Marogna, professor of Psychoanalytic Diagnosis and Psychoanalytic Interviewing for the Department of Philosophy, Sociology, Pedagogy, and Applied Psychology (FISPPA), psychoanalyst, member of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society – Veneto Center, and member of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA).

The meeting will be moderated by Vincenzo Calvo, professor of Psychodynamics of Family Relationships at the FISPPA Department of the University of Padua.

The event will open with introductory remarks by Andrea Facoetti, professor of Psychobiology and Chair of the Fabio Metelli Central Library of Psychology Commission, and by Massimo Ferrante, Director of the Library.
